Logitech Wireless Music System Review

For my first review, I thought I would find a product that would work for a solution I have been trying to do for a long time. This task of listening to internet radio stream’s away from my computer, which I have been looking into for quite a while. The only thing I could come up with was to hack a wireless device or use a Shuttle PC. You see, I like to listen to the KFI AM 640 radio stream on the weekends, but don’t like to be tied to my computer, especially this time of the year when it is nice outside.
The review
Then, with a 330ft range and the ability to stream whatever your computer is playing, I opted for the Logitech Wireless Music system. The wireless music system includes a USB Bluetooth adapter, a receiver unit with RF remote, a set of RCA audio cables, and a CD with the Media Anywhere software by Logitech on it. Installation is easy, just plug in the USB adapter, second, plug in an audio source and the power adapter to the receiver, and then just play music, any format, even DRM-protected files. You don’t have to even install the included software. The software is only used for when you have multiple receivers.
Since I don’t have a real stereo setup, I was just going to use this with computer speakers and even headphones. Both of these methods work fine, but this product really doesn’t fit the bill for me. The major part that I didn’t realize when looking at this product was externally powered, which makes perfect sense now. It just doesn’t fit the portable profile I thought it would. I could see this product working for people wanting their PC audio on their home stereos as intended.
Audio quality, range, and build
The audio quality on this product is good. I am not much of an audiophile but it sounded good to me, as good as it would of coming directly from the sound card itself. There was no static or muddy sounds as one might expect with wireless audio devices.
Range was good on this product as well; I got about the advertised range of 330ft, maybe more realistically 250ft or so. This product even worked well outside of my house about 200 ft away from the base unit through a door. Again, you are restricted by a power cord though which isn’t a big deal for the recommended use of the product.
Like most Logitech products, the build quality is great. The transmitter has a stylish base unit and the receiver and unit all are aesthetically pleasing and don’t look like eye sores as other stereo products might. I would not worry about hiding it from sight in a living area. The bundled RF remote for the receiver unit hardly works at all, I actually could not get the play/pause, stop, and next/back buttons to work even when pointing it right at the RF sensor on the receiver unit itself.
Overall, with the ease of installation and use, this is a nice product. At the $150 price tag. I find this product to be not worth it for me, but for the audiophile looking to stream music, it seems like a nice option if you have the money.
The Logitech Wireless Music System is available at most computer retailers today at a price of $150 MSRP.
