We all know that wired keyboards and mice can become an annoyance to your desk and your overall productivity. Wireless desktop sets have been increasingly popular for home and work use, and sometimes are bundled standard with desktop computers. Today, I'll take a quick look at the Logitech S530 Laser for Mac desktop set.

Highlight

"Apple's Mac computers consistently deliver premium style and experience — and our new desktop expertly complements those attributes," said Denis Pavillard, Logitech's vice president of product marketing for desktops and keyboards. "We've applied our award-winning design process to develop a minimalist, slim design to match the Mac. Our keyboard delivers important additional controls that improve the digital media experience and our revolutionary laser mouse technology provides exceptional precision."

Features

Included with the S530 desktop set is a version of the Logitech MX 610 mouse and a variant of the S510 keyboard. The keyboard that is sold inside the S530 desktop set has many different features. One of the features unique to the set is the Mac-only buttons on the keyboard for Spotlight, iPhoto, and iTunes functionality in addition to volume and power control. Secondly, the mouse included in the S530 set includes volume controls for easy access to volume up/down and mute.

Keyboard

The keyboard takes 2 AAA (triple-A) batteries, and takes seconds to setup. Put in the batteries, push the connect button, and your all done! The feel of the keys is excellent and very similar to a laptop or notebook keyboard. The keys do not feel cheap and the keyboard does not "dip" when you push the keys in. The keyboard also features a palm rest that is somewhat comfortable, but a cushion would have been a nice touch.

Mouse

Setting up for the mouse is just as easy as it is for the keyboard, put the batteries in (2 double-A this time) and push the connect button. Because of its light feeling, the mouse feels cheap but it is overall well-built. Both the keyboard and mouse have a 6 month battery life and have a status light that becomes lit with when you have less than 10 days left.

Software

Logitech Control Center is included with the S530 Laser for Mac desktop set but has a limited feature set, with no ability to check the actual battery status and acceleration settings.

Verdict

All in all, the Logitech S530 Laser for Mac desktop set is an excellent keyboard and mouse addition to your Mac desktop, whether it be a Mac mini or iMac. The only downside of the S530 desktop set is that you are unable to change acceleration settings within Logitech's own software. We experienced no flaws when testing this product and would highly recommend it for a new Mac user or the experience programmer.
