Lexmark E450dn Laser Printer

Lexmark E450dn

Lexmark has always been one of the major manufacturers of consumer-oriented printers in both inkjet and laser versions. Today, I take a look at one of their newest laser printers geared towards the home office or small business, the E450dn.

The E450dn isn't a small printer per say, but it isn't made for the home user. The E450dn comes with the basics: the printer itself, a power cable, and the black toner cartridge. I will mention that the printer is a black and white printer so if you're looking for a color printer, you're looking in the wrong place. The E450dn can be connected to either your computer or your network with a USB or parallel cable, or for networking, a standard ethernet cable.

Lexmark claims that the printer can print up to 35 pages per minute and prints the first page in as little in 7 seconds. In our tests we noticed that it took 8.24 seconds from the time we clicked Print to the time the printer stopped on a 1 page Word document. When printing a 5 page document, it took 13.77 seconds to complete. This printer is a speed demon.

For print quality, text was crisp, clear, and easy-to-read while graphics and images generally weren't the best quality, they still weren't bad enough to throw away. But, this printer is made for printing text and subtle graphics, not full-page graphics, photos, and things like that.

The Lexmark E450dn is a little noisy, and sometimes, made random pulses like it was starting a job, but really wasn't. One thing that could be a problem is that when a print job starts, it does make the lights flickered on and off in our testing area, not sure if anyone else purchasing this printer will experience the same.

Overall, the E450dn laser printer from Lexmark is a great workhorse laser printer for small businesses and home offices but it isn't the cheapest, running you about $600 USD. Lexmark does offer alternative models as low as $150 USD.
