Label printers come in all different sizes and shapes, but do you know that there are label printers that can take advantage of your computer? Today, I take a look at the Smart Label Printer 450 from Seiko that does exactly that.
Instead of using a small integrated keyboard that is set in plastic to enter information like traditional label printers/makers, the SLP 450 (from here on) connects to your computer via USB 2.0 and labels are printed through the somewhat easy-to-use software. The software isn’t that well designed and looked like it came from 1999. Not so good for novice users, but it works.
The software also allows you to print various types of barcodes that can be used for a variety of uses. The SLP 450 can be refilled with different types and sizes of labels, from shipping labels to file folder labels, chances are Seiko has a label for your project.
The label printer itself is a great device and I was very satisfied with the printing quality and speed of the device. You may not need it now, but there will be a time when you need it and that’s what is great about this label printer. I was amazed with the easy setup of this device as well.
The best thing about it that it does not need to be refilled with ink. The SLP 450 uses direct thermal technology, similar to the technology used in receipt printers to print text and images clearly. It also does not use ribbons, toner or ink like most consumer printers. This helps save you some money, running you about $150, less than a standard inkjet printer and a set of labels.
Overall, the SLP 450 Smart Label Printer is a great device that is similar to the Dymo LabelWriter Twin Turbo that we reviewed earlier, but less expensive. If you need something that is more advanced, check out the Twin Turbo, but if you are looking for a simple, and cheaper device check the SLP 450.
