xtrememac tangostudio XtremeMac Tango Studio for iPod Review

The XtremeMac Tango Studio is a new speaker system for your iPod that does the basic functions most people need, but at under $100 - is it compromising on sound quality or extra features? Read on after the jump to find out.

The Tango Studio packs in two 3-inch full-range loudspeakers with a stereo high-dynamic amplifier for great audio performance. It also has a retractable universal dock just in case you want to go old-fashioned and listen to the radio with the built-in FM tuner. It also has a built-in auxiliary input jack on the back for other media players, and includes a remote control for accessing volume and media transport controls.

Behind the cloth speaker grille is a blue LED display that notifies you of the speaker's volume, mode, and FM frequency and is hidden when not in use. For just $80, this may just be one of the best budget-priced iPod speaker systems available on the market.

How does the sound quality stack up to our previous favorite, the Altec Lansing iM600? The Tango Studio didn't have as much bass but the sound was crystal-clear with no distortion at higher volumes. We can certainly see the Tango Studio in a small college dorm or home office setting for those looking for a smaller, good-sounding, and budget-priced speaker system.

The FM radio reception wasn't the best, and we weren't fond of the cable-style FM antenna. AM radio lovers will have to look elsewhere as there is no AM tuner in the Tango Studio.

The XtremeMac Tango Studio is available today from XtremeMac and other retail stores for just around $80 and for just under $70 from Amazon.com.

Pros

  • Good sound.
  • Retractable dock.
  • Great choice for the budget-conscious.

Cons

  • Limited bass.
  • No AM radio tuner.

Final Verdict
4 out of 5 stars.
