Nokia BH-902 Bluetooth Headset Review

nokia bh902 Nokia BH 902 Bluetooth Headset Review

Most Bluetooth headsets are pretty much the same, but Nokia has decided to up the ante with the new BH-902. It has a built-in OLED display, but does that really prove to be useful? Did Nokia sacrifice the hard work on the sound quality to work on the display?

I received the BH-902 with the Nokia N95 8GB cell phone, which we'll be reviewing in July. The BH-902 is one of the first, if not the only Bluetooth headset that has a built-in display. It allows you to view recent calls, and view caller ID without having to take the phone out of your pocket. Since I paired it with a Nokia phone, it'll show if I have unread messages or not as well.

The headset also has the regular features of a headset: a volume rocker, a call button, and an on/off button, though the buttons felt stiff and hard to press. It is the most expensive of the bunch we're reviewing this week, at a steep $169.99. Pairing the headset was a cinch, power it on, and the headset is in pairing mode.

Call quality was decent, but again the static appeared that was heard in the first two headsets of the week: the Aliph New Jawbone and Etymotic etyBLU. It wasn't as bad as the Jawbone, but still very noticeable. The BH-902 doesn't include noise reduction technology like the three we've reviewed thus far, but callers on the receiving end said we were heard loud and clear.

I don't believe that the OLED screen is worth the $169.99 you'll be paying for this headset, since you have to take it off your ear just to see who's calling before you pick it up. It does however come with a carrying strap so you can attach it to your belt or shirt pocket to see who's calling. It's a cool feature but it needs more functionality.
