Zacuto ZGrip iPhone Jr. Review

Now that the iPhone is capable of shooting video with the release of the 3GS, companies are trying to find ways to sell accessories to help you shoot better video. Today we're taking a look at the ZGrip iPhone Jr. from Zacuto.
If you haven't heard about Zacuto, they manufacture digital SLR camera accessories such as shoulder-mounts and handgrips to aid you in your filmmaking with HD-video capable cameras such as the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D. While the iPhone doesn't shoot nearly the same resolution video (640x480 compared to 1280x720 or even 1440x1080), some filmmakers might be eying this tiny device for smaller scale projects.
Your iPhone simply snaps into the cradle built into the ZGrip and you're ready to shoot. To expand your capabilities, there are two 1/4 20" threads for mounting to a tripod or mounting accessories such as a light or a microphone with an accessory called the ZicroMount which sells for around $75.00. If you want to be a citizen journalist and go out to shoot CNN iReport-style video, then this might be a perfect product for you, if you can get around the cost.
The ZGrip iPhone Jr. does a good job at stabilizing the iPhone's video, similar to what a Steadicam would do to a larger HDV or DV camcorder and the grip on the ZGrip iPhone Jr., while a sandpaper-like finish, is actually fairly comfortable to hold. However, we feel we feel that the ZGrip iPhone Jr. is somewhat expensive, coming in at $69.00. Zacuto also sells a Pro version for $295.00 with articulation joints for rotating the iPhone to any creative shot you're looking for. So clearly Zacuto is targeting the higher, prosumer end of the market.
Purchase the ZGrip iPhone Jr. today with any of its accessories at Zacuto's website for $69.00.
