Palm Slightly Upgrades Offerings

And I mean slightly. The Palm Pre was upgraded to the Palm Pre Plus with double the standard memory, the Palm Pixi now has wifi (hence adding a plus to that as well), and there’s a new app in the webOS App Store that allows you to create a mobile hotspot for other devices.

Palm’s announcements at CES weren’t anything too stunning, considering what else has been released this week (ahem, I’m looking at you Nexus One). With a slight upgrade in storage to the Palm Pre, it becomes the Palm Pre Plus. I guess it’s somewhat like Apple releasing the iPhone 3GS, but much less significant.

As far as the Palm Pixi is concerned, it got WiFi. Hooray WiFi! Oh and both of these are heading to Verizon, which is sure to make a few people happy. No one can argue that Verizon’s network is something to be desired by phone manufacturers these days.

Last, and possibly most interestingly, there’s an app heading to the webOS store that allows you to create a personal WiFi “cloud” for up to five of your other WiFi enabled devices. Definitely a cool addition, but sadly the press release implies that it’s subject to your data plan, meaning this might not be as cool as we thought it was. However, it’s still an alternative to Sprint and Verizon’s MiFi devices, which require you to (god forbid) carry another device around with you.
